College Admission Real Sample Essays

The “Can I Get An Extension” Student

May 17, 2022

TIP: Unlike Taxes, You Can’t Get An Extension On College Applications Deadlines.

TALE: I hate taxes. I had to file for an extension this year. Ugh. I loathe to take that option, but at least I had that option. Not true with college applications.

Last fall a mom called because her daughter was freaking out over the upcoming deadline. The daughter had everything she needed, but she was still awaiting something from the school to complete her application. Literally everyone was in a panic. With less than 24 hours to go, all I could suggest is that she reach out directly to the admission office, but she could not nor should not rely on getting an extension.

In the end, she got what she needed and made the deadline. Disaster avoided.

TRUTH: Applying to college is like taxes for teens. The thing is, you cannot file for an extension. That 11:59pm deadline, well, my friend, that is REAL.

OK Parents - Let’s consider all the items your teen will need to gather for the application: transcript, test scores, resume including any and all school honors, activities, leadership, community service, athletics, etc. The number of essays needed will increase exponentially depending on the selectivity of the institution and the number of scholarships s/he will apply to. Oh and, let’s not forget: Parents will need to have TAXES completed for filling out financial aid documents.
