Mistake #5 - Believing College Admissions Is Objective.

May 24, 2022

TIP: Remember This Process Is Not Objective, It is Subjected To Humans.

TALE: There are two things college bound teens wish for, 1) that the college admission process is “fair” and objective and, at the same time, they also want, 2) the college admission office to see her/him as an individual for all s/he brings to the table. The reality is that both cannot be true.

As Gary Clark said in my podcast interview with him, “If this were an objective process, we’d spit out a spreadsheet with all the GPAs listed from top to bottom and be done with admissions within minutes.” As the director of admission at UCLA, the institution that receives the highest volume of applications, Gary assures us that each and every application is read at least once, if not, two and sometimes three times.

TRUTH: When it feels like an institution didn’t “get it right,” you might in fact be right. But the truth is, the humans that make up each college admission office are doing their best to uphold the values and needs of that institution.
