After being in college admissions for over 20 years, I have found that the biggest obstacle for any family is simply knowing what to do. Whether parents attended an Ivy League school, there are older siblings in the family, or if the child will be the first in the family to attend college, it does not make a difference. The fact is, with every family I meet, this process is new and unique to that particular student. 

Your only job as a parent is to do what you can to help your teen maximize her/his college choices. Period.
